This incredible mahogany corner cupboard is a true example of American Centennial furniture in the Chippendale style. As we celebrated our 100th anniversary as a nation in 1876, there was a huge revival and interest in 18th century furniture. This custom handmade 2 piece cabinet has many fine features with extensive detailing. The three delicately carved flame finials set atop a dramatically arched pediment with finely carved rosettes. Below the swans’ necks is a carved shell with scrolling leaves. The arched double doors each have 9 individual divided lights or panes of glass. The doors retain their original cast brass key escutcheons, working lock with key, glass and brass hinges. Another dramatic feature of this corner cupboard is the large shell carving inside, above the first shelf. How exquisite! All three serpentine shaped shelves have plate holders. Notice the reeded quarter columns on either side of the glass doors. The base has 2 small hand dovetailed drawers with chamfered bottoms and their original cast brass pulls. Below are 2 raised paneled doors with deeply carved shells in the center panels. The doors retain their original cast brass key escutcheons and working lock. Inside is a single shelf. Reeded quarter columns are repeated on the corners of the base and there are cast brass pulls on the sides. The corner cabinet rests on boldly carved ball and claw feet having additional carved shells on the knees and between the legs. This cabinet will require at least 28” space on each wall. The finish is original and in excellent condition having a deep, rich color and very desirable patina. What a grand statement this will make in any home. 95"h X 41"w X 23"d, Condition: Excellent, Circa: 1860-1870's.
