This walnut Renaissance style Victorian desk has incredible carving. The secretary comes apart in 3 pieces for ease in moving. The pierced carved crest has amazing detail and is perfectly executed. There are 2 opposing wolf looking creatures. Notice the detail in the fur, paws and face! The bold cornice has acanthus leaf carvings and ogee molding with carved rosettes. Below is the carving of a winged angel’s face or cherub with scrolling leaves and vines. On either side are fully turned and heavily carved columns with ionic capitals. Check out the extensively carved door with the raised center panel of 2 dolphins and a flaming torch – amazing! The door drops down to reveal a replaced burgundy felt covered writing surface. The door retains its working lock, key and brass key escutcheon. Inside are 9 cubbies of various sizes for storage and 2 small drawers. The cabinet base has carved acanthus leaves along the top edge and a drawer with a magnificently carved pull of a wolf head. The head is framed by more scrolling leaves and vines. The base is supported by 2 large full columns with boldly carved Corinthian capitols resting on a shaped platform base. The desk rests on suppressed ball feet. This impressive desk retains its original finish which is in excellent condition having a deep, rich color and patina.
