This unique chest of drawers with desk is called a lock side. The dresser is in the Renaissance Revival Victorian style. Notice the location of locks on the side or stile of the chest. There is a working lock on the right side which is designed to cleverly secure the right side edges of all the lower drawers. The key escutcheon on the left side stile and on the drawer fronts are only for balance and aesthetics. The chest of drawers has an ornately carved crest and delicate looking side galleries. Notice the extensive use of burled walnut panels on the crest and drawer/desk fronts. The top drawer retains its original working lock. Below this drawer are 2 faux drawers which drop down to become a felt covered writing surface. Inside are 9 small hand dovetailed rosewood drawers with delicate banded inlay and small brass pulls. The desk retains its original working lock with key. The chest of drawers retains its original fancy cast brass pulls and key escutcheons. The side lock rests on walnut and brass casters. The finish is in excellent condition having the richest color and desirable patina.
