This Victorian marble top stand is known as a half commode. The cabinet is mainly constructed of rosewood. These were originally designed for the bedroom as a secondary washstand. They were smaller than the main washstand – hence the term half commode. The original marble has a moulded edge with ‘cookie corner’ fronts. The base has a hand dovetailed drawer with recessed paneled front and a delicately carved wooden pull. Notice the ¾ pillars on either side. There is a recessed panel door below with its original turned wooden knob. Notice the recessed paneled sides as well. The rosewood graining is pronounced and dramatic. The marble is in excellent condition. The cabinet’s finish appears original and is also in excellent condition. These stands are extremely versatile and serve a variety of functions such as end tables, bedside tables or hall tables. 29"h X 21.5"w X 19.5"d, Condition: Excellent, Circa: 1870's.
