This vintage black lacquer, Chinoisserie highboy was made by the Drexel Heritage furniture company. Black lacquering is also sometimes referred to as Japanned. It is an ancient technique used in the orient for furniture decorating. Look closely and you will see there are raised designs over the lacquer using gesso and highlighted in gold or colored pigments. This Chinoisserie style displays paintings of pagoda inspired buildings, birds, figures, trees and florals. The hand painted and stenciled designs are well executed. The Queen Anne style tall chest or highboy has 4 top drawers which graduate in size. Below are 3 smaller drawers. The highboy rests on tall, slender serpentine shaped legs with pad feet. All the drawers retain their original cast brass hardware. What a handsome, vintage piece to grace any room in your home. 65"h X 36.5" X 21"d, Condition: Excellent, Circa: 1970's.
