This custom solid mahogany secretary desk was made by the exceptional cabinet shop, Charak Furniture Company, Boston MA. This company was known for making examples of 18th century period furniture of the highest degree. The secretary comes in 2 pieces. The dramatically peaked crest is accented with dental mouldings and delicate beading. There is a finely carved finial of unusual size and design. Notice the shapely raised and recessed door panels below. The door retains its original working lock, key and cast brass escutcheon. Inside are 2 original adjustable shelves. The desk has a slant li8d which drops down to become the writing surface. The lid also retains its original working lock, cast brass escutcheon and key. Inside is a wonderful interior comprised of 9 various sized cubbies, 2 pencil holders and 8 small drawers with brass knobs. Now check out the shape of the desk below. The swelled sides and base are referred to as Bombe sides or kettle bottom. This requires great skill to achieve which explains why you do not see this form very often. Notice how the front of the drawers are individually synched to create the swelled affect – amazing! The 4 drawers graduate in size as well. Each has their original cast brass hardware and working locks. The sides of the desk have their original cast brass lifts; again another uncommon feature found in fine 18th century furniture. Now check out the meticulously carved paw feet and the carved moulding between the legs – exquisite! The secretary retains its original finish which is in excellent condition having a deep, rich color and desirable patina. 88"h X 39"w X 21.5"d, Condition: Excellent, Circa: 1930.
