What a lovely English piece of Georgian or Classical inspired mahogany furniture. The bookcase/secretary comes apart in 2 pieces for ease in moving. The top cabinet has a beautifully serpentine shaped crest and glass doors. The pierced carved crest has applied carved rosettes and delicately carved urn shaped finials. Two of the three finials have been repaired but this is only noticeable upon very close inspection. Just below the crest is a finely carved egg and dart moulding. Look closely and you will see that each door has 4 separate glass panels framed with applied decorative gold moulding. Inside are 3 shapely shelves with applied damask gold fabric. The serpentine shaped base cabinet has a delicate inlaid pattern. Below is one long serpentine shaped drawer above 6 smaller drawers. All the drawers are hand dovetailed, having their original working locks and cast brass pulls. Look closely inside the knee hole and you will see a recessed cabinet with a bowed front door. The door retains its original working lock and a key. Inside is a single shelf. The secretary retains its original finish which is in excellent condition having a deep, rich color and very desirable patina. 87"h X 38"w X 19.5"d, Condition: Excellent, Circa: 1900.
