Check out this highly unusual Centennial Chippendale block front chest of drawers. These are sometimes also referred to as campaign chests due to the large cast brass handles on the sides. This exceptional custom made solid mahogany chest has many unique features. The shaped top has a moulded edge and a slide out tray below. There is a tight 10” crack on the top located on the left side, towards the front. It is not offensive and does not compromise the chest. The cabinet maker cleverly designed and executed the chest to appear to have 6 hand dovetailed drawers of various sizes. In actuality, there are 4 drawers which are all hand dovetailed. The two top drawers have their original working locks. Notice the original fancy cast brass pulls and how they were adapted to fit the different drawer fronts. The case has a deeply moulded base resting on elegantly carved ogee bracket feet. There is about 3 inches of partial moulding loss on the left side, exposing a square nail. It is not immediately noticeable and we have chosen not to have it replaced, although arrangements can be made to do so, if preferred by the new owner. The chest appears to have its original finish which is in excellent condition having a deep, rich color and patina. The chest’s size and design makes it very adaptable to a variety of uses such as a server in the dining room, a bedroom dresser or a lamp stand in the living room. 35"h X 38" X 26"d, Condition: Excellent, Circa: 1870-1880's.
