A circa 1940s Royal Hickman Horse Head Vase From the Ed Blas Collection, it is in excellent vintage condition. Measuring just under fourteen inches tall, by ten inches wide, and three inches across.
From the Estate of Florida Artist Roddy Brownlee Reed, as a friend and fellow collector, the vase has a label on the bottom which reads; FROM THE ED BLAS COLLECTION. Ed Blas is the author of a Haeger Pottery book, and this vase was from his collection, which was given to or purchased by Roddy sometime in the 1990s.
Please note: this item was purchased by me, together with inventory items # 3522 & 4197 in 2006 along with many other pieces. These three were designated to be together and match perfectly. Although, only one has the label.
First, as a metal sculptor and potter in California, then on to Illinois, Royal Hickman worked for Haeger until 1944 but continued to contribute additional designs to the firm during the 1950s on a freelance basis. He operated art pottery studios in Tennessee and Florida in the '40s and '50s. Hickman also designed crystal animal figurines for the Heisey Glass Company.
