The engraving is a portrait of Thomas Carlyle (1795-1881), who was a British historian, satirical writer, essayist, translator, philosopher, mathematician, and teacher.
The engraving is signed with the engravers initials, LC (Louis-Jacques Cathelin), and dated. Cathelin was born in Paris in 1738. He engraved small portraits of historical personages, literary men, and artists, and was distinguished by the skill and delicacy of his work.
Joseph John Elliott and Clarence Edmund Fry were British photographers who formed the London company Elliot & Fry that was in business from the 1860s to the 1960s. This piece was signed by them as well.
In outstanding antique condition, the photograph measures, approximately three and one-half inches across by five and one-half inches high. It is framed, which may have contributed to the preservation of this elegant piece. The frame measures approximately six and one-quarter inches by eight and one-quarter inches overall—a fantastic historical find.
