A circa 1950's carved wood friendship cup or Coppa dell’amicizia with four spouts, in excellent to near mint vintage condition.
A tradition from the Valle d’Aosta mountain village in Italy, it is wide shallow bowl with a floral carved lid that is also known as a Grolla. Handmade and produced by only a few workshops, it measures approximately nine inches in diameter. Traditionally used for drinking Valdostan Coffee or strong alcohol/mulled wine, with family or friends on important occasions. Drinking from it is a ritual following rules where each person takes a sip then passes it to the friend sitting on the left who takes a sip, this continues in a clockwise direction until the cup is empty. Once started it should never be put down until all the contents are finished, otherwise it will bring bad luck.
