n excellent vintage condition, circa the late 1970's, this whimsical folk-art clay figure is known as a muñecas.
Created by artist Josefina Aguilar who gained international acclaim in her early twenties, when Nelson Rockefeller began collecting her pieces during his trips to Oaxaca, Mexico in the mid 70's. It is approximately six inches high by three inches wide.
Focusing on Mexican traditions and folklore Josefina depicts characters and events such as Frida Kahlo, the Virgin de Guadalupe, celebrations of the Day of the Dead, every day in the local market, and historical characters.
As a major folk artist; her work is shown in the International Folk Art Museum of Santa Fe, the Rockefeller wing of the San Antonio Art Museum, and the Mexican Museums of San Francisco and Chicago.
