Royal Hickman Florida, free form with a wave crest, brown with a cream color drip glaze Centerpiece Bowl circa 1949 - 1953. Very organic in shape and color, it measures eleven inches long by eight inches wide by three inches in height. This beautiful art pottery piece is from his Tampa, Florida Studio. A modern free form piece that is marked with his name, the number 572, and Florida on the bottom. There are generally no cracks, chips, or crazing. There is a rough patch in the interior and a glaze skip on the rim. Both from the kiln. The design is indicative of Hickman and perfect for a tropical decor or collector. This mid century modern find is in excellent to near mint vintage condition.
First as a metal sculptor and potter in California, then on to Illinois, Royal Hickman worked for Haeger until 1944, but continued to contribute additional designs to the firm during the 1950s on a freelance basis. He operated studio art potteries, in Tennessee and Florida in the 40's and 50's. Hickman also designed crystal animal figurines for the Heisey Glass Company.
