This unique picture frame was entirely hand made and is one of a kind! From all indications it was made between the early 1900's and 1920's, and was most likely done by a young student. During this time there were many craft projects being taught in schools and colleges, and learning Pyrographics (the art of wood burning) was one of them. In this process the design is usually drawn upon the wood and then with various tools is "burnt" out, and in many designs such as this, the wood is also stained out in lighter and darker tones to create contrast. This particular frame was decorated with a classical style vase and a beautiful acanthus leaf pattern around the perimeter. Finally, several coats of lacquer or varnish were applied with sanding in between to create a fine, smooth finish. The back stand is also made of wood, and is the original, along with the brass stays with their screws. Overall the frame measures 12" in height and 8" in width, while the inner frame is 5 3/8" by 3 3/8". A wonderful piece for that special photo!
