This jigger/stick puppet is more likely to be from Europe, since those from the United States were primarily done as black figures. Almost always hand carved and hand painted, these 'jiggers" as they were called, were often decorated with buttons and pieces of cloth, and were popular play toys for children during the 20's & 30's. They were also found in the puppet theatres and traveling side shows where they were extremely popular entertainment for adults and children alike. This particular jigger is done as a white figure and has a red bowtie made of felt. He's in good condition other than some of the original paint peeling, but the loss is not too great as you can see from the photos. The back stick may be a replacement at some point in time. He stands 10" high and is all ready to do a dance for you! A charming piece for the collector!
