Here is a very unusual miniature lacquered box from Russia. It was created in the village of Fedoskino, whose artists are renowned for their unique technique of painting; in many pieces they will apply a thin layer of gold or silver leaf over which they will paint the scene using diluted oil paints leaving some areas almost clear or translucent with the gold or silver shining through, thus giving a brilliant light to the piece. It is sometimes impossible to get a photo which shows this effect, however I got lucky in this one; you'll see in one of the photos a rainbow kind of reflection coming through, although to the naked eye it is gold. Also please note the unusual shape of this "box"; it has two parts, with the dome sitting over the base, both decorated with a snowy country scene of people walking to the church in the background. The "cup" in the bottom section serves as a container for small jewelry, etc. On the bottom is the artist signature "A. Marozov" and date "1987" as well as the title "The Field of Avtorske". It measures 2" in height and 1 1/2" in diameter, and is in mint condition!
