This unique lacquered box comes from the town of Kholui, one of several villages in Russia that is famous for its' hand painted lacquered boxes. This particular box is very unusual in both shape and function, that being for holding a ring in the little drawer that pulls out, and there is also a cup inside the globe which can hold other rings or small pieces of jewelry. The hand painted scene shows three different churches with their gates surrounded by beautiful trees and a river flowing all around; there is also a tiny village in one area. The scene reflects one of the favorite subjects of the artists of Kholui, that being of the spring floods which often occur from the Teza river and surround the village giving a special color to the landscape. This box is entitled "On the Golden Ring of Russia" and is signed by the artist Kursova and is dated 1999; this can be found around the bottom edge of the globe.
The box measures 3 1/2" in height and is 2 3/4" in diameter at the widest point. It is in mint condition!
