This unusual pen was hand blown and has red liquid in the stem, much like a thermometer except that it moves freely up and down as you use it; these are often referred to as "dip pens" The glass nib or point is designed to hold the ink within the "ribs". These were made from the mid 19th century until the early to mid 20th century and most came from Europe; the only one that I've ever seen like this (with the floating liquid)came from Germany. For those of you who might be collectors of glass pens, you probably would have a better idea of it's history than I am since this came with some autograph books, which I have listed separately.
