Offered is a Victorian era autograph book which begins in 1882. It belonged to Miss Ella Anderson of Senachwine (Township) Putnam County Ill. A later insert in the book says "Grandma Pierson's autograph book. Translation in 2nd right desk drawer." The translation has been lost, but it refers to the fact that some of the entries are in a foreign language. There are umlauts above some of the words, so this is possibly German. The earliest entry is from 1882, the latest we found was 1912. It appears Ella became a teacher because the later entries appear to be from students. The content of the messages are typical--limericks, poems, best wishes. The cover of the book is in the condition one may expect for a 135 year old item--it is worn and the spine is torn. Some of the pages are stained. The book is 6 1/4 x 4 x 3/8". As an addendum, we recently travelled to an auction in north central Illinois on the Illinois River. As we drove on a foggy day that created a haze that muted the oranges and rusts of the fall landscape, we passed through an area that said Senachwine and identified the area as Putnam County. We could not help but think of Miss Ella Anderson in 1882 and wonder if she would emerge from the mist to ask us to sign her autograph book. Original price $20 Item 9366a Lot 10/1/7
