Offered is an amazing Victorian era Capote hat. A capote is defined as "in the late Victorian period, a tall, but compact, bonnet worn well to the back of the head"(Vintage Hats & Bonnets by Susan Langley). We are not sure we can do the description justice, but here is our attempt. The body of the hat is in a stiff taffeta-like fabric, pleated vertically to curve around the shape of this hat. It has a shine to it, but is not iridescent. The front has a ruffled edge of the same fabric. Two curved ostrich feathers in the same color curl toward the front from the left side. The back, though, claims equal attention. The back has, in oval shape, a honeycomb pleated piece that has a grid pattern of teeny metallic beads. The right side has a green folded tab bow which anchors a chin tie. The left side also has a chin tie. More about that in a moment. The interior is a rough textured fabric lining. The detailing of the pleating on the hat is really amazing. Yet, we have some questions. Our concern is with the right chin tie. It is in an iridescent ribbon in green with tones of brown and maroon. It forms a rosette near the bow and then extends to become a tail. We are not sure this ribbon is original to the hat. If it is not, someone did a remarkable job in replacing the original as it flows quite naturally. Lending credence to the thought that it may be a replacement is that the left side tie is in plain black ribbon and has a couple pin holes. Details: the edges of the hat appear to be enhanced with wire. It is 17" around the arch of the front and 10" around the back edge. The ties are 2 3/4" x 26"; the black one is 4" wide when stretched and 27 1/2" long. The condition is quite good--we found no holes other than the pin holes noted, no stains and no odor. The ostrich feathers are full with some of the stem showing. Item 7137a
