Victorian Era Black Mourning Wrapper with Ruffled Muffler 1890-1910
LAST CALL! 30% OFF! We are most pleased to offer this outstanding Victorian Era mourning garment. It is in silk taffeta, we believe--a fabric that holds its shape and has the stiffness of a taffeta, but not quite the weight. We are terming this a wrapper or a morning robe. We do not believe this was intended for outside use--it is not lined and closes only with hooks and eyes. Let's mention some of the appealing features. Most obvious is the 10" wide collar that has embroidered open work in a fleur de lis design. It is certainly an indication that this was a quality piece. Next, we want to call attention to the sleeves because they help to date this. They are 24" long leg o mutton style, with sewn pleats helping with the voluminous look. The sleeve end is a wide quilted cuff with a buttoned tab. Found with this and we will assume it is perhaps original to the wrapper, is a ruffled muffler. We do believe this was meant to be worn around the neck although we toyed with it on the head. It is several layers of a chiffon like fabric mounted on a 1 1/4" band and the ruffles lending about 3" in height. The ruffled section is 18" long and connects with hook and eye which leads to the black satin 3 3/4 x 26" long ties. A large 8" double bow appears at the juncture near the throat when tied around the neck. Measurements were very difficult with this as the sleeves and the body, front and back, is pleated and meant to hang very loose. Based on how this is fitting our model which is a size 6-8, we would term this a large, possibly a medium. This is 51" shoulder to hem. We did measure at least a 48" chest. An item of this age will show its age in various ways, so PLEASE NOTE: there are several pinholes which can be seen if one holds the garment to the light. In addition, we found a couple less than pea size holes--none of these are evident without examination. There is a 1" slit in the fabric under the collar near the bust on the left side. We also find several slits or frays at the neckline on the right side. We found some white flecks on the back upper. The muffler shows signs of fading on one side. One thread loop is missing on the front about at about the hip. This is an exciting find, we hope you will enjoy it. Item 6596a
