Glamorous Victorian Style Brocade Cape in Off White
We can see this as a romantic cape for a winter wedding
We are having a little difficulty dating this. It is definitely Victorian Style--we are especially taken with the collar which is in the style of the 1880's 1890's. The high ruffled collar is called a storm collar and was meant to offer protection in the winds of colder weather. The cape is a plain style with no armholes. It uses other popular Victorian conceits, such as the generous, padded and sewn down pleats of the shoulders. The sewing details such as topstitching are of high quality. The brocade uses a repeat embroidery stitch in a stylized seed pod design (in our view). The two sets of "toggle", self fabric buttons and loops are also typical Victorian. Our problem in dating is partially because this is in such good condition. The lining is in a cream shade and is of the feel and texture similar to a modern synthetic--we do not think it is silk as it is in too good of condition. The fact that the cape has no stains, no tears, no deterioration of the fabric and that the same can be said about the lining causes us to question the age. It also follows the glamour look of the '30's, so it could be from the deco era too. Any opinions will be welcomed.
Measurements are difficult also: Collar is 4 5/8" tall with 3" ruffle; It is 21" across the back; 23" across the front; 62" lower circumference and 31" overall length. Condition: as noted above. We would say that the hem shows barely discernable soil.
