Offered are nine mail order quilt patterns in their original 6 3/4 x 4" envelopes. Each envelope contains a stock paper colored 3 1/2" square vision of the pattern and light paper (like dress patterns) of the actual pattern. On the back of the envelope the name of the pattern is written in pencil, we assume by the original owner. The patterns offered are: Fanny's Fan, Chrysanthemums, Rising Sun, Butterflies, Fan Patchwork, Orange Peel, Work Box. Star of Many Points, Twinkling Stars. We had some difficulty dating these as there is absolutely no date or company name on the vellum or cellophane small envelopes. We have two hints. One is that one could order the larger pattern book for "25 cents in stamps or silver." It does not say "coin" it says "silver." One could pay for things with postage stamps, but we think that faded by the late '60's. Our other hint is that this grouping comes from a large plastic bag we found at an estate sale--full of cut-outs of quilt patterns from newspapers. Many newspapers carried these designs, which could be ordered by mail, but these had faded by the '80's. Some of the cut-outs do have dates--anywhere from the late '20s to the late '60's. We believe these patterns in the envelopes were mail ordered. PS In the future, we will consider offering the newspaper cut-outs as found--they will be a good reference source.
