SALE! 10% OFF! Offered is the 1909 edition of The Book of Sweethearts featuring Pictures by Famous American Artists. Decorations by Will Jenkins. Published by Grosset and Dunlap in 1908 and distributed by Bobbs Merrill Company. Ok, now that is out of the way and we can talk about these gorgeous illustrations honoring the beauty of Edwardian era women--the sweethearts of the title. The women featured are, of course, idealized images of beauty within its time period. The Gibson Girl look is quite evident. In addition, each page features at least one sappy poem. An example: "Soft sunshine falls across her breast, She is so blest. I'm jealous of its arms of gold; Oh, that these arms her form might hold." The illustrations are by Will Jenkins and are flat pink roses in the McIntosh style. Let us qualify our enthusiasm by reporting that the cover of this book (featuring a Harrison Fisher illustration) is bowed. The pages within are in very good shape with no tears and no foxing. Most are loose from the spine--which leads one to contemplate using the book for attractive framed prints. The pages are 10 1/4 x 11 1/4. Here are some of the artists featured: Howard Chandler Christy, F. Grisham Coates (?), Lester Ralph, Gretz. There are a total of 21 color prints--back to back for 10 framable prints. We have seen this book listed as high as $200 for a first edition. We are pricing for the use of the book as salvage for prints or for research purposes. Original price $25. Item 12156a Lot 11/1/7
