A fine example of a heavy chromed, porcelained, and scrolled metal frame barber chair by Theo A. Kochs, Chicago, with porcelain arms, red leather seat, back, headrest, and footrest, adjustable back and swivel seat height (hydraulic pump handle on side), embossed on the front “Manufactured by Theo A Kochs Company, Chicago” as well as on the footrest “Theo A Kochs, Chicago”. An American company, the Theodore A. Koch firm of Chicago began about 1870 with a line of heavily carved wooden barber chairs. By 1920, their chairs had evolved into heavy chrome and porcelain with leather seats. This restored example is in very good condition, with some porcelain coat edge losses, replaced upholstery, minor scratches, and light wear commensurate with age and use.
