A colorful foliage landscape in the mountains by American painter and illustrator John Joseph Enneking (1841-1916). Enneking was born in Minster, Ohio and took his first art classes at St. Mary’s College in Cincinnati, later moving to Boston, where he studied lithography and painting with Samuel Gerry. While in Boston, he received a letter of introduction to Leon Bonnat, one of the more famous painters and teacher in France, which inspired Enneking to travel with his family to Europe, where he studied landscape painting at the Munich Academy in Germany, and the Barbizon School painting in Paris. He returned to the Boston area where he settled with his family, with a studio near Hyde park that became a gathering place for some of his friends and fellow artists such as George Inness, Ralph Blakelock, and Frank Shapleigh.
