Burrill Oil Painting Landscape, A Farmer and His Cows

A fine New England bucolic landscape with a farmer and his cows by American artist Edward E. Burrill (1835-1913). Burrill was born in Newburyport, MA and during the 1860's, he worked as a lithographer for Meisel Brothers,J.H. Bufford, and J.H. Bufford's Sons. He drew several views of coastal Massachusetts towns, sheet music covers, and worked as lithographic illustrator for the naturalist Louis Agassiz. He was also employed by the architectural firm Cabot Brothers as a photographer and assistant draftsman. By 1867, he moved to Lynn, Mass., and is credited with being a founder of the artistic colony there. In his early years there, he taught at the Lynn Evening Drawing School (1874-90s) and made crayon portraits of local people; by the 1880s, however, he had become well known for his paintings of the landscape, cattle, and interiors. Edward Burrill is best-known today as one of the seven Lynn Beach Painters. Oil on canvas, signed lower left, labeled “E.Burrill” on verso, as well as relining conservation history on verso dating to 1973, and housed in a period giltwood frame, with some edge and gesso losses. Dimensions: 27 in H x 20 in W, actual; 34.25 in H x 27.25 in W, framed. Ref: 172
