A fine oil landscape, possibly of Jackson Falls in New Hampshire by American artist Sylvester Phelps Hodgdon (1830-1906). Hodgdon was born in Salem, Massachusetts and initially studied portrait painting under Edward Holyoke Jr, then with Benjamin Champney in Boston, going on to become a successful painter of White Mountain and New England coastal scenes, as well as Adirondack scenes. Oil on canvas, signed and dated 1880 lower left (on rock), and housed in a decorative period giltwood frame. Dimensions: 32 ⅛” H x 24” W, actual; 36 ½” H x 28 ½” W, framed. Ref:8
