This nice New Hampshire winter landscape was attributed to American artist Joseph Harry Wheater (1885-1959). Wheater was born in Bradford, England and came to the United States with his parents at a very young age. They initially settled in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and later in South Boston. Wheater worked as a young man designing steam boat whistles, and enrolled in the Fenway School of Illustration, and later studied under Boston watercolor artist Henry Rice, as well as becoming a reference artist for a motion picture company in New Jersey. He returned to South Boston after the death of his father, and went on to become known for his landscapes and seascapes. Oil on board, unsigned, with a label on verso authenticating the acquisition from Joseph White, the sole receiver of Wheater’s estate. Housed in a molded giltwood frame. Dimensions: 8” h x 10” w, actual; 13 1/5” h x 15 5/8” w, framed.
