This exceptional winter landscape was painted by American artist Paul Starrett Sample (1896-1974). Sample was born in Louisville, Kentucky and went to school at Dartmouth College, eventually moving there to become artist in residence and settling in Vermont, where he became well known as a regionalist painter of American and New England landscapes. This winter scene features birch trees and a young deer in the foreground with a serene panoramic view of the New Hampshire countryside. Oil on canvas, signed lower right, graphite inscription on stretcher “From Above the Verney Farm,” Vose Gallery, Boston, MA label on verso, and housed in a molded wooden painted frame. Dimensions:28” h x 63” w, actual; 35” h x 70 1/4” w, framed.
