A fine stone lithograph print of the Brown or Norway Rat, from of The Viviparous Quadrupeds of North America. Following the octavo Birds of America, the Audubons ( J.J. and his two sons, John W. and Victor G.) published and issued an Imperial Folio Edition of The Viviparous Quadrupeds of North America. From 1845-48, the Audubons issued, by subscription, 150 hand colored stone lithographed images of mammals of North America, with each sheet measuring about 22” x 28”. Perhaps 300 sets of these prints were sold, and were generally bound into two volumes.
These animals were drawn by John James Audubon and Victor Gifford Audubon probably contributed to the background. This is a hand-colored stone lithograph is marked No. 11, Plate LIV, drawn from nature by John J. Audubon F.R.S.F.L.S., and printed by the highly skilled printer James T. Bowen of Philadelphia, dated 1845. Excellent overall condition, matted under glass in a molded giltwood frame, with minor imperfections. Dimensions: 20” h x 26 1/8” w, sight; 27 ⅜” h x 33 ⅛” w, framed.
