A wonderful collage using a paintbrush and shredded currency done by American artist Barton Lidice Benes (1942-2012). Benes was born in Hackensack, New Jersey and graduated from Pratt Institute in Brooklyn and went on to become well known for his shredded currency assemblages, collages, and sculptures. In a darker continuation of Joseph Cornell’s shadow boxes, Barton Lidice Benes produced reliquaries containing the likes of Shirley Temple’s dollhouse, a fragment of an Egyptian pyramid, and a piece of tile from Hitler’s house. Benes called his best-known series of these intricate works “Museums”—miniature exhibitions of the eclectic artifacts he obsessively collected. NOTE: All the shredded American currency in his works he purchased pre-shredded from the Federal Reserve.

Mixed media collage, including shredded currency and a paintbrush, signed and inscribed “For Karen,” and dated 1985, mounted on linen under plexiglas in a simple wooden frame. Dimensions: 15 ¼” h x 12 ¼” w, framed.
