A wonderful portrait of a lying dog by American artist Scott Leighton (1849-1898). Leighton was born in Auburn, Maine and raised horses as a young man to support his art studies, eventually moving to Boston, where he opened a studio. He became well known as painter of race horses, animals, and barnyard scenes. Oil on canvas, signed lower right, and housed in a quarter sawn oak frame with bellflower carved gilt inset. Dimensions: 9” h x 14” w, actual; 16” h x 21” w, framed.
