This colorful modernist abstract painting was done by contemporary American artist Jan Lhormer (20th/21st century). Lhormer was born in Pittsburgh and has exhibited widely throughout New England and beyond including The Painting Center, New York City, The Cape Cod Museum of Art, Lyman Eyer Gallery, Provincetown, 808 Gallery Boston, MA, Reynolds Ryan Gallery New Orleans, and The Mendelson Gallery, Pittsburgh, PA. She teaches painting and drawing at Bridgewater State University and has published articles in Provincetown Arts Magazine, Art New England and Cape Arts Review. Jan Lhormer earned a BFA in 1988 and a MFA in 1990 in Painting from The Boston University School of Visual Arts. She received a bachelor’s degree in Art History from Colorado College in 1983. Her work has been reviewed by The Boston Globe and featured in Cape Cod Life Arts Edition and Cape Arts Review Magazine. She has described her work as follows - “My abstract paintings reference sea and skies, ponds, gardens and marshes influenced by the coastal landscape of Cape Cod, Massachusetts where I currently live. The paintings are built intuitively through visceral layers of color and gesture. I am inspired by romantic landscape paintings, scientific matter, and the rich, expressive qualities of paint . Forms such as flora, fauna, buds, fish, birds, and other flying or swimming creatures inhabit the watery environments. I use rich color to build form and create movement within an emotionally charged space. In the tradition of modernist painter Kandinsky and other synesthetics (a condition where perception of senses are joined), I think of color as having musical sound. Through these imaginary landscapes, I honor the magic and resilience of our fragile environment and acknowledge our transient connection to the earth.”
