A wonderful oil portrait of a young woman painted by contemporary American artist Mary Phillips (20th/21st century). Phillips lives in New Boston, New Hampshire and is an artist who works in a Renaissance style of oil painting. Her works evolve from conception of composition through initial value study drawings. The underpainting on canvas or linen is then produced, completed with final oil color and glazing. Her works consist largely of figures and portraits, as well as still life and landscape paintings, and she has exhibited her work at many New England exhibitions including the President’s Gallery at the Guild of Boston Artists Regional Painting Competition. This particular work is painted in the manner of Dutch artist Johannes (Jan) Vermeer (1632-1675), well known for his interior and figure painting. Oil on canvas, artist inscribed on verso stretcher “Portrait of a Young Woman, After Johannes Vermeer, by Mary Phillips,” and housed in a beautifully carved giltwood frame. Dimensions: 18” h x 16” w,actual; 24 1/4” h x 22 3/8” w, framed.
