A fine example of a General Map of the Russian Empire, French version published by The St. Petersburg Academy (Geographical Department of Academy of Sciences) in 1787. Mapping was carried out in special state departments. The Geographical Department of the Petersburg Academy of Sciences, and the Geographical Department of the Cabinet of His Imperial Majesty issued general maps not only in Russian, but also in Latin and French, because of the mutual interest of European states and Russia in dissemination of information about its territory. This general map is in very good overall condition, with some creasing, edge tears, imperfections, discolorations in spots, a blue crayon line in the lower right cartouche, and with what appears to be minor water damage along the lower left border. Professionally framed under glass in an antique giltwood frame, with some spot and area losses on the frame, primarily the lower left edge. Dimensions: 21” h x 46 ½” w, sight; 27” h x 52 ⅜” w, framed.
