A wonderful polychrome carved totem on a curved wooden panel, probably Northwest Coast Native American from the 19th century, with metal braces added on verso to a split repair. The figures carved on Northwest Coast poles generally represent ancestors and supernatural beings that were once encountered by the ancestors of the lineage, who thereby acquired the right to represent them as crests, symbols of their identity, and records of their history. This totem panel is in good condition, with split braces, losses along the base, as well as expected wear from age and use. A copper wire has been added on verso for display purposes. Dimensions: 38 ½” h x 15 ½” w x 5 ½” d.
