This wonderful impressionist sporting oil painting of a fisherman fly fishing for trout in the river was painting by American artist Walter Granville Smith (1870-1938). Granville-Smith was born in South Granville, New York and became well known as illustrator in popular publications including Harper’s, Collier’s, Scribner’s, and Truth. His exhibition record is phenomenal - At the Boston Art Club (1898-1909), fifty years at the National Academy of Design (1890-1940), at the Pennsylvania Academy (1904-1928), at the Art Institute of Chicago (1896-1925), at the Corcoran biennials (1907-1937), and at the Carnegie International (1905-1931). Oil on canvas, signed lower left, with title on front plaque and inscribed on verso stretcher “The Pool,” and housed in a carved giltwood frame. Dimensions: 25 in H x 30.13 in W; 32.25 in H x 37.13 in W, framed.
