A wonderful pair of gilt metal sculptures of the figure Vajrapani, the Buddhist mythological protector of the nagas ( half-man, half-serpent deities), referred to as the Thunderbolt Bearer. Notice the serpents around their neck and ankles. The pair of sculptures probably date to the early 20th century. Very good overall condition, with minimal surface wear and discoloring. Provenance: Purportedly from the Pearl S. Buck estate in Philadelphia. Buck was a well-known author, and the first American woman to win the Nobel Peace Prize for Literature. Dimensions: 36” h x 29 ½” w x 9 ½” d.
