This wonderful oil painting still life of peonies is attributed to Sarah De St. Prix Wyman Whitman (1824-1904). Whitman was born in Lowell, MA (or possibly Baltimore, MD) and after studying with Thomas Couture in France, and William Morris Hunt, she returned and became an active painter in Boston, exhibiting widely and becoming known for her flower paintings, portraits and landscapes. She also became one of the most important book designers of her day, credited with revolutionizing book design. Oil on canvas, unsigned, dated 1902 lower right, identified on front plaque, and framed in a period outer giltwood frame. Dimensions: 14” h x 16” w, actual; 23 ½” h x 25 ½” w, framed.
