A splendid oil portrait of Sir Charles Pinford Esq, Governor of the Barbadoes, by English artist Nathaniel Dance-Holland (1735-1811). Dance was born in London, England, and went on to become very well known for his portraits of notables, including King George III and his queen, as well as Captain James Cook, actor David Garrick. and Benjamin Franklin numerous times. He added the suffix Holland to his name when he became a member of Parliament, and was made a baronet in 1800. Dance was also one of the founding members of the Royal Academy. The sitter is Sir Charles Pinford, Esq, (1709-1788), Governor of the Barbados from 1756-1766, and friend of American Statesman, Benjamin Franklin. Oil on canvas, unsigned, with front plaque, inscribed on verso, in a gilt gessoed period frame, with some minor gilt touchups. Dimensions: 31” h x 26” w, actual; 38” h x 33” w, framed.
