This impressionist coastal oil painting was done by American artist Horace P. Giles (1850-1930’s). Giles was born in Mississippi, later moved to Boston, where he was known as a crayon portraitist, muralist and scenic painter of backgrounds. He is also known for his landscapes and nocturne paintings.Oil on canvas, signed and dated 1898 lower right, as well titled and inscribed on verso “Sketch, Salisbury Beach, Mass, 1898”. The painting has since been relined, with a photo of original verso inscription attached. Dimensions: 14” h x 22” w, actual; 23 ¾” h x 31 ¾” w, framed.
