An exceptional oil painting of a race horse on derby day with his jockey and a gentleman by British artist Clifton Tomson (1775-1828). Tomson was born and raised in Nottingham, England, where he became known for his horse and animal paintings. Some of his work was engraved and published in the “Sporting Magazine”. He was also known in Nottingham as “the celebrated animal painter of this town”, oil on canvas, signed and dated lower left “Clifton Tomson, (sp) Nottingham, 1809, and housed in a period black and gilt frame with corner rosettes. Dimensions: 27 3/4" h x 36" w, actual; 33 3/4" h x 41 3/8" w, framed.
