This nice landscape of cattle crossing the brook was painted by well known American artist William Preston Phelps (1848-1923). Phelps was born in Chesham, New Hampshire, and after studying in Europe for seven years, returned to set up a studio in Lowell, Massachusetts and became well known for his plein aire New England landscape, animal and harbor scene paintings. Oil on canvas, signed lower left, faintly titled on verso stretcher with graphite “Cattle Crossing the Brook,” and housed in a gold gilt period frame, with minor spot edge losses. Dimensions: 12” h x 20” w, actual; 20 1/2” h x 28 1/2” w, framed.
