This wonderful oil painting of a Paris winter cityscape was painted by Spanish artist Rafael Bataller (1920-2011). Bataller was born in Blanes, Spain and eventually his paintings achieved immense global success following a sign commissioned in 1971 by the Directorate General of Tourism. His paintings of the waters of Formentera are what earned Bataller the nickname 'the painter of Formentera'. After an initial trip to Paris in 1950 taken toward the end of his studies, Bataller returned perennially to the so-called City of Lights; urban picturescapes and bridges are dominant themes in his Parisian paintings. Oil on canvas, signed lower right, also on verso, with partial title artist inscribed on verso “ Pont Neuf, Ile de la Cite, effet de Neige,” and housed in a wooden frame with linen lined inset. Dimensions: 25 ½” h x 36 ½” w, actual; 32 ¼” h x 43” w, framed. Includes documentation from a 1981 sale of this painting by Gallerie Drouant in Paris.
