This beautiful impressionist watercolor painting of a French garden was done by Swedish American artist August Franzen (1863-1938). Franzen was born in Norrkoping, Sweden, studied at the Academie Julian in Paris, and later moved to the United States, sharing a studio in New York with Stanford White and Carl Bienner. He became well known for his impressionist portrait and landscape paintings. Watercolor on paper, signed lower right, and housed in a giltwood frame, with some gilt edge loss. Dimensions: 14 ¼” h x 21” w, sight; 17 ½” h x 23 ¾” w, framed.
