This beautiful impressionist watercolor painting of a French garden was done by Swedish American artist August Franzen (1863-1938). Franzen was born in Norrkoping, Sweden, studied at the Academie Julian in Paris, and later moved to the United States, sharing a studio in New York with Stanford White and Carl Bienner. He became well known for his impressionist portrait and landscape paintings. Watercolor on paper, signed lower right, and housed under glass a giltwood frame , with some gilt edge loss. Dimensions: 14 ¼” h x 21” w, sight; 17 ½” h x 23 ¾” w, framed.
