This nice oil painting of a harbor scene was done by French American artist William Malherbe (1884-1951). Malherbe was born in Senlis, France and after becoming a successful artist in France, moved to the United States, eventually settling in Thetford, Vermont, with frequent summer visits to the noted art colony in Gloucester, MA. Malherbe is known for his impressionist still life, outdoor scenes, and nudes. Oil on canvas, unsigned, labeled on verso “130, Gloucester, Mass, William Malherbe,” and framed in a nicely carved giltwood frame. Some minor paint losses visible on the canvas, as well as some frame edge losses. Dimensions: 15” h x 18” w, actual; 23” h x 26 ¾” w, framed. Provenance: Purportedly from the Natalie Hayes Hammond Estate.
