This exceptional bronze sculpture of girl on a wall was created by Romanian sculptor Dimitri Haralamb Chiparus (1886-1947), incised on base “D. Chiparus,” with wonderful delicately carved detail on her hands, head, and hair, contrasting with the gentle bronze folds and ruffled edges of her dress and bonnet. Chiparus was born in Dohohoi, Romania, and later studied under Italian sculptor Raffaello Romanelli. In 1912 he traveled to Paris to attend the Ecole des Beaux Arts, studying under Antonin Mercie and Jean Boucher. In his early work, he represented mostly realistic figures, and he employed chryselephantine, to great effect. He later became well known for embodying the Art Deco style in his figural bronzes of Russian Ballet dancers, French theatre, Ancient Egypt, and early motion picture subjects. The sculpture is in excellent overall condition, with great patina, light soiling and wear, and minor imperfections. Dimensions: 14 1/4" h x 7" w x 5 1/4" d.
