This tonalist landscape painting of a sunset view on Mount Monadnock in southern New Hampshire was painted by American artist Dennis Sheehan (b. 1950). Sheehan was born in Boston, Massachusetts and went on to become well known as a tonalist painter in the French Barbizon School style, with dark palettes and thickly pigmented surfaces, much like George Inness in the 19th century. Sheehan’s work can be found in many private and major collections, including the White House. He is also a member of The Guild of Boston Artists. Oil on canvas, signed and dated lower right, and housed in a giltwood frame. Dimensions: 24” h x 36” w, actual; 30” h x 42” w, framed.
