This beautiful South Shore coastal inlet scene was painted by American artist Frank Henry Shapleigh (1842-1906). Shapleigh was born in Boston, Massachusetts and after serving in the Civil War, he studied in Europe and then returned to New England, with studios in Boston and Jackson, New Hampshire, where he became very well known for his White Mountain landscape paintings. Oil on canvas, signed and dated 1878 lower right, titled on front placard “Boats on an Inlet,” with a Roger King Fine Art, Newport RI gallery label on verso,and housed in a beautiful giltwood frame. The location appears to have been identified as Cohasset, Massachusetts, with a later inscription on verso foam board. Dimensions: 14” h x 24” w, actual; 21 1/2” h x 31 1/2” w, framed.
